Hi Brandon,
> Any other thoughts as to cause of the smell?
Take a very careful look at the oil pressure sender/switch. I just installed
a (used) one on my engine, and it is permitting some fumes, however there is
no visible leak. I am talking of the big canister sender for the oil
pressure gauge. This is a high-pressure area, and 75-90 psi can easily
vaporize hot oil without any obvious trace.
Another helpful tool would be the leak detector UV dye/blue light. There is
one for any fluid, including engine oil. In your case, you don't even have
to clean the engine; just drop the dye in the oil, run the engine for a few
minutes, then shut it off. Look for leaks with the small UV Maglite. Very
efficient way to pinpoint a leak on a "dirty" engine. If you want to have
fun, use a highlighter pen and write insanities everywhere, then have one of
your friend help you find the leak. Works very well on black plastic parts
where you wrote "Not here, dummy !".
