Mike,
I run 225/50/17's on my '83.
They are 7.5" wide and have a ET45 offset.
I get rubbing in the rear since my fenders are not rolled.
There is no rubbing in the front, but as you mention the inner edge is very close to the spring perch.
2mm sounds about right.

Anyone running these with a 225 or 235 tire?  Curious as to clearance with 
front spring perch.
I'd like to go here but my 215 50 16 only have about 2mm claerance.
