That's the way to do it.

BTDT lots of times. You're correct - it is tight but you can do it. It's a
place where slim ratcheting spanners are worth their weight in gold. It also
helps to follow the Audi instructions for the 20v exhaust and custon bend a
'C' spanner (often known as a crescent spanner in the UK - not to be
confused with a US Crescent wrench which is a type of adjustable wrench) -
so that you can remove the lower nut at the downpipe/turbo.
