[urq] DO I still use the large round thermostat gasket if I remove thermostat?

My urq is apart - cooling systemwise. I already have
the thermostat out and will use some prestone super
flush soon. My first thought is if I don't install
the thermostat that round gasket that snugs the outer
edge of the thermostat may just pop out and end up
stuck in a hose or block as it's swept about by the
coolant. I figure if I don't use this gasket it will
leak at the thermostat housing. Any BTDT?
The thermostat I found in the car is 70c and it looks
like the PO drilled a small hole in it so that some
fluid always passes through. I could reinstall that
for flushing if it's foolish to just use the
thermostat gasket.
