I would agree with Steve. A few precautions like reducing loads on the
original system through the addition of switched relays for high-voltage
accessories (lights, fuel pump, AC compressor, etc.) will go a long way
towards preserving the system. I'm still running mostly original wiring in
my early 83. Knock on wood...

problems ... I'll take my relatively simple urq over any of the other Audis
I own (T44 derivatives) for electrical system issues ...
IMO, as long as you address the well documented issues with the '83 wiring
the '83 can and will be just as robust as any of the other WX model urqs ...
you find out about most of the issues from the info that RDH assembled many
years ago ...

... to respond to Andrew's worries ... no flames from me! I'd also comment
that the state of the undercarriages on both cars calls into question the
quoted mileages too ...
