It is not just the type and location of the fuse box. The
wiring itself is more brittle and the design margins a lot
less than the later cars. The issues and pain are well
documented, try finding the same degree of frustration
with respect to the wiring on the later cars and it's not
there.
Sad to say but the red one looks like it is only worth the
value of its parts.

... I'd argue that any modern car can be "nightmarish" for electrical
problems ... I'll take my relatively simple urq over any of the other
Audis I own (T44 derivatives) for electrical system issues ...
IMO, as long as you address the well documented issues with the '83
wiring the '83 can and will be just as robust as any of the other WX
model urqs ... you find out about most of the issues from the info that
RDH assembled many years ago ...

... to respond to Andrew's worries ... no flames from me! I'd also
comment that the state of the undercarriages on both cars calls into
question the quoted mileages too ...
