They are aftermarket. I have some adds in some older VW&Porsche magazines (before it was European Car). They were to keep from having the paint all scrached inside the handle. If you look at yours, you will probably see what I'm talking about. There were also plates available to cover up around the handle on the side with the linkage. These were incredibly easy cars to break into, and popular back then.
As for the lights/turn signals/fuel gauge. Sounds like a fusebox problem.
