[urq] hesitation, bucking on takeoff

I have a black battery under the back seat of my 1986 Quattro, there is a
yellowish vent hose leading down through a grommet, I can't attach the other
end of this hose to the battery. It doesn't seem to be the battery specified
for this car. How important is this hose attachment?
