It needs to be able to slide.  When you press down for reverse, the
shaft slides down inside the ss body.  When I put mine together, the ss
body would only slide about halfway down the shaft before becoming
jammed.  I discussed the problem with Richard, and he suspected that the
shaft was slightly bent.  I confirmed this by rolling it on plate glass.
I tried to tweak it back to straight, but it really has to be perfect.
I picked up a shaft from a 4KQ, but it had the same problem.  It was
close enough that I was able to make it work by sanding and filing some
material off the shaft.  Another option is to have the ss body machined
to make the hole just slightly bigger.  He really should increase the
tolerance a bit when he makes that piece.
