Won't lightening the flywheel upset the overall balance of the motor? Isn't
the front pulley a harmonic balance weight that will be thrown out of kilter
unless all the reciprocating parts are re-balanced?
I agree lightening will improve accelleration but it wont increase power and
I would have thought it was inadvisable unless the whole lot is rebalanced.
Am I right?..... give me a moment before replying while I don the fireproof
suit.
All the best

Where's the pictures! =)

A while back I took an MC1 heavy flywheel to a local automotive
machine shop to see if they could machine off the weight around the
circumference to make it flat like an MC2 style wheel. If the flat
part was without that thick lip, and new threaded holes and pins were
made for the pressure plate, then I think an MC2 pressure plate/clutch
would work on that because they look very similar except for the
weighted edge.

The place I took it to couldn't do it, and they didn't think anyone
else locally could or would either. I guess it was too much material
for them to want to remove, which kind of sucks. I bought one of my
MC2/3B flat flywheels for about $100. I don't recall how heavy they
are, but there is less metal than the MC1 and similar style 'wheels.
I brought in both types so that they could measure from the 3B one to
modify the MC1 one.

Actually I think the shop may have said they could do it but that it
would cost as much as the flat flywheel would cost to just by.

I have a 10vt that will go into my Coupe GT but I can't remember at
the moment if I have that a lipped or flat flywheel for that install.
I suspect it is a flat one, which is another alternative for someone
wanting to lighten their 'wheel while things are apart. I guess
that's my contribution/point, if I had to pick one. =) (besides that
some shops won't do that type of modication, cost effectively anyway)

I almost sent this thinking it was to the main list. Now that I
notice it's the urq list, then of course the crank orientation pin is
in a different place for those later flywheels compared to the urq.
So, I guess my point is that if you can relocate that pin then the
MC2/3B wheel is another alternative to work from.
