 Yeah, that's the usual failure.  When you get more time... and off the side of the road... you may want to check for shaft movement.  The rear bearing (small one) usually wears the worst, and is pretty easy to replace.

It was the brushes. Used my donor alt. for the part (quick and dirty install on 
the public road).
