Martin,
BTDT with Bill B. last summer on my 3B engine / early 4kq tranny combo. Used all 3B clutch parts, except (I believe) for the TO bearing, which I think needed to be a 4kq part. Scott Mockry of SJMAuto.com helps me get the parts together for "special" projects like this; I can verify with him if it will help.
Anywhoo...as for it being permanently disengaged...I'm pretty much stumped! Seems like if anything it would be the other way around, since the pressure plate is clamped onto the disc during assembly.
The only things I can think of are:
1. That the TO bearing you used is stuck on the input shaft somehow (perhaps the fork is oriented wrong and held it pushed out?) and "perma-dissed" the splines on the pressure plate when you inserted the tranny.
2. The slave cyl. overextended itself when unloaded and the piston is stuck in the "out" position...This would be an easy one to check since you could (hopefully without taking too much back apart), get to the retainer pin and drive the slave back out and see if the clutch engages.
Either that or you forgot to re-connect the drive shafts. That would allow the car to roll pretty freely, too :-)
Sorry I can't offer more, just opening up some dialogue on this.
Best of Luck!
-Jon
