OK, I think I finally narrowed it down. I need an engine. Today I tested the
ignition system. I pulled the coil pack and removed the spark plug boots. I
used 5 ignition cables from a 10 v MC engine. I removed the metal shield on the
spark plug end and cut the end of the boot where it flares. With a spare set
of F5DPOR plugs, I removed the screw on piece at the top of the plug. The 10
valve cars do not use this on their plugs. I laid the coil pack on it's side and
inserted the ignition cables onto the coils and to the plugs in the head. The
car started right up, on 5 cylinders and then after about a second, dropped
#4 cylinder. With my Fluke 87 DMM, I have the adapter for RPM. I clamped the
inductive pickup around each ignition cable to sense spark/RPM. Every cylinder
is getting spark. Every cylinder is getting fuel. I either need piston rings or
I need a valve job or both. So I will live with this missing engine until I
finish rebuilding my spare AAN.
