[urq] lifter clatter

Dennis,
Isn't it convention wisdom that you don't use synthetic for break in as it won't allow the rings to seat properly? Are the lifters new? IME, it took awhile (like 10 miles) for the new hydraulic lifters to quiet down after replacing them in my old '86 5ktq with 210k miles 15 years ago. I didn't soak them before installing. While, like you, I wasn't real happy about the noise right after doing all the work (done with a timing belt and water pump), they quieted right down after a "spirited" drive, and were quiet from then on.

Personally, I might consider doing the MotoMan engine break in procedure. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I just got the URQ running again with the newly rebuilt block (WX), and the
big valve hydraulic head which was sitting for about 4 months is clattering
annoyingly. The rings rods and mains are new so I don't want to rev it too
high. Oil pressure is good, and I'm using Rotella Synthetic 5-40.
Any secrets to getting them to "pump up"? I can't put it under load yet as I
have to bleed the brakes and clutch as well as a bunch of other fiddly bits
to wrap up.
If I have to take them out and soak them, I will just sit and cry for a
while as my body is just not up to anymore of this.

PS There is no feeling quite like having a newly built engine fire on first
attempt.
AFTER of course cranking with no coil to get it oiled up.
