I have been successful at disassembling and reassembling both a fuel pressure regulator and a fuel distributor. There was one time I tried to rebuild the FD for my old Fox and had a problem with the pressure regulator inside the fuel distributor, but other than that there were no leaks. It has been years, but at least back when you could buy a kit with replacement seals.
One thing to be watching for is wear on the regulator shaft that follows the airflow sensor plate ... on my 5000CSQ (MC Engine) the shaft developed a sufficient gap so that fuel would leak between the shaft and bore ... there is no seal on this interface, AFAIK if you have this issue you throw the FD away ...
Interestingly, I just recalled that the FD I had to clean on the Fox was as a result of the fuel filter disintegrating due to some fuel additive I had put in the tank. I don't know if the pressure regulator in the FD was damaged by the flotsam from the filter or my R&R.
... and thinking about the filter ... if you're worried about crap flaking off in the tank, why do you believe it got past the fuel filter? Unless I had reason to suspect otherwise I'd look no further than the pump and fuel filter. I actually installed the "sediment trap" on my car when I replaced the main hose from the tank to the pump inlet. Basically this is a low pressure fuel filter like they used to have on pre-FI carbureted engines ... this should keep the big chunks from even getting to the pump ...
