We may be playing a little fast and loose with terminology. I recall seeing photos of the
new Type 44 cars getting some kind of highly touted rust preventive 'dipping' process
during manufacture starting in '84, but I've never heard of any reference to galvanized
sheet metal. A zinc-based 'dip' perhaps? No idea either whether the same process was
ever applied to T85s, but my guess is not.

I don't believe any North American t85 cars were galvanized, were they?
I believe t44 cars were galvanized beginning in 85 for the 86 model
year. In my experience (83 UrQ, 85 5ks, 86 5kcstq, 87 5kcstq, 91 100,
95 A6q, 95.5 S6A etc, etc) galvanization on mid-late 80's cars was the
most effective. My 86 5kcstq with 187k on the clock has not even a
speck of rust on it. Been in New England it's entire life. OTTH, my
95.5 UrS6 Avant had a bit of rust perforation. They don't build them
like they used to heh heh...
Anyone?
