I can see it now -- quattros 'over-restored' (in the manner of so many other high $ and/or
concours cars these days) with carefully sourced 'original' wax applied in a few key
cavities and obscure areas!

Subject: [urq] Wax coating
My first "real" job out of High School was as a New/Used car mechanic at
Volkswagen/Porsche/Audi dealer. All the new cars that came in were coated with this "wax",
and I had to steam clean it off as soon as they arrived at the dealership. A few times I
went to the dock yard to pick up a new car and drive it back, but I always brought a
scrapper to clean off the glass. I was told then (late 70's early 80's) that the wax was
to protect them from the salt air on their long ship voyage from the Fatherland. The cars
were sprayed with the wax in Germany before the journey to the states. Just thought I'd
share a bit of this useless info.
