... I don't remember the specifics, but once I heard that in the USA, the penny is not "legal tender" per se.  If you wanted to make a particular statement and went into the utility company to pay your bill with pennies ... they are not obligated to accept them as payment.  

... I knew of some kids who took pennies and placed them on the railroad tracks so that they would be flattened by the oncoming train ... not that *I* would do anything like that!  I also remember seeing stamping machines where you insert a penny and 50 cents and they emboss some other pattern on the penny ... you think they'd get in trouble if that were illegal ...
