In addition to Martin's recommendation that you may be seeing overboost, another one to look for is the timing signal from the distributor.  Verify that crank to cam timing is correct and then check that the distributor rotor points to the mark on the distributor housing at TDC compression.  

... wish I could speak to the differences between the '83 and '85 models, but none of what you list sounds out of the ordinary.
