Tom,

Are you sure you bought the correct flywheel?  The standard audi flywheel
that fidanza sells is for the 01A cars, and needs modification for 016
cars.  See here:

Starters between both cars should be the same, I think.  I thought all 5
cylinder starters would interchange.
