I'm confused. Are you saying the problem dimension is the bearing diameter, or
thickness/width? It sounds like you mean diameter, but I'm confused by the discussion of
shims (which sounds like a means of dealing with the latter). I understand we're talking
about 75mm bearings in any case.

We appear to have a winner! Can't remember the who mentioned wheel bearing
slop, but that appears to be the case. It makes sense in as much as it was
replaced before the noise appeared. Apparently there was a TSB back in the
day (1987) but served up mostly for 4000Q where as a "slight metallic noise
could be heard when accelerating away from a stop especially when steering
hard in one direction and suspension under load" This applied to the 75 mm
wheel bearing which was partially resolved with an "upgraded" bearing 443
498 625 and more permanently solved with a bigger 82 mm bearing and
housing. The wrench (different from the installer) was very surprised at
the ease with which the bearing came out, very little force. I now need
best source for above bearing and RF CV joint for same as it was damaged in
the diagnosis process.
thx
Mike
