In the old days, this problem was solved by very sharp pointed chisel,
where one hammers in number of indentations within bearing seat area
(aprox 5-8 per cm square). More play requires more and deeper
indentations. The way it works, is that chisel indentation raise the
edges of the dent, thus providing support for the bearing. If used with
Loctite, it would solve your problem without shimming, which doesn't
really work in the case of radial play.
