[urq] Elec usage needs

Brandon,
Trying to grapple with the same issue myself right now...ever since I switched over to the old-style alternator (rather ratty example I found at the junkyard), I've had borderline low voltage, especially with the headlights on. While the car runs and drives just fine, I think this situation may be the culprit for a mystery (haven't tracked it down yet due to more pressing issues) dialing back of the boost and/or timing by the 3B ECM and associated decrease in full throttle acceleration. Funny thing was it all worked perfectly for the first 6 months or so after I did the IC mod...

Another lister suggested I ground the alternator directly to the body rather than through the bracket, which sounds like a good idea, as well as replacing my 6-8(?) y.o. battery which is probably not helping things. Another idea is using a higher-regime voltage regulator, but I think that will help about as much as using a lower-temp thermostat to remedy a too-small radiator.

There are (or at least were) a few 110amp alternatives available to the early-style alternators, although I'm not currently seeing them listed for Typ85s on the sjmauto.com parts catalog. I DO see a 110amp alternative to the 5kq alternator which looks from the picture like it would bolt up the same way- can anyone verify/dispell?

A call or email to Scott at SJM would answer the question if you want to explore that route; he helps me solve these types of dilemnas regularly.

HTH,
Jon
