Hi Mike,
I had roughly the same problem with my -88 MB. The shop changed everything,
and now I really mean everything... but no cure.
At last the clunk was sourced to the front differential and propshaft rubber
bearing, which was shot.
No clunks anymore...
Cheers,

Hey Mike,
Sounds like you have the same issue I do. My car has done it since the day
I bought it. Seems to be the most pronounced when I turn the wheel had as I
am backing up. I have also noticed it on hard transitions on the track. I
have no clue what it is. I have replaced EVERYTHING in the front
suspension. Nothing is loose. I would be very curious to find out what it
is. It is a bit frustrating, not to mention annoying. I must say, the sway
bar seems like the most probable culprit at this point. I wonder how hard
it would be to upgrade to a later style without replacing the a-arms and
sub-frame. It sure would be nice to not have to wedge it in and out of
those bushings every time I want to dis-connect it. It is even harder with
the nice new stiff bushings. I have been looking into getting one from a B4
90 where the links attach to the stuts (like an E30 M3). This type of setup
would also allow it to be adjustable. There would be some welding required
to attach the
upper link mounts to the struts though. I just need to get a set-up out
to Hawaii for a decent price. Know of anyone parting a B4 in your area?
Eric
