I wish it were that simple.  We started there and ended there.  I sat with 
the wrench as we reinstalled those parts and used the proper tools to cinch 
everything up.

Well, that narrow it down to the strut top captive nut or the cartridge
collar nut. For captive nut, nothing works like a fresh nut and proper
tool, while for the cup, (without dismantling) the large pipe grip works
fine, although leaving some marks.
