Lots of talk on this on other old car boards, I saw it on the Ur M3 boards (multivalve high revving engine, www.s14.net ). Basically Zinc was another lubricant ala lead whose need has been phased out in newer engines and certainly therefor in oils especially as is isn't eco friendly. Many had recommended special blends still favoring the Zinc but the bottled ZDDP would broaden the solution set quite a bit.

Apparently it's a chemical taken out of a lot ofnewer motor oils that older engines like - they particularly mentioned flattappet (as opposed to rollers) lifters - which is what we have - right? They said most of the "high mileage" motor oils have ZDDP and that somediesel motor oils have it. Anyway - anybody want to weigh in?
