... I don't have the wiring diagram with me ... I suspect that the circuits
they tell you to leave on are intended to be cut off with the ignition
switch off ... so it is a way to look for a problem in the ignition switch
proper. The rear window defroster is a fairly low resistance load.

2nd update : still 150mA, but before dismantling the oil cooler shroud (that
is stuck in ice from the last snowstorm) to get to the alternator, I read a
bit. If a diode is dead, the ALT light should glow with ignition OFF. Not
the case, so I bypassed the alternator test for now.
In the Bentley there is also a diagnostic procedure for a current drain test
(page 27-15):
- turn off ignition switch, radio and all lights but leave rear window
defogger switch and air conditioning switch ON
- disconnect ground cable
- connect test light between ground cable and negative battery terminal
- if test light burns brightly, something is switch ON or shorted
- if no faults are found in fused circuits disconnect cables from non-fused
components : alternator, starter, ignition system and dashboard instruments.
So there is two more things to test, the instrument cluster and the
coil/distributor, in addition to the alternator.
Can someone help me understand why leaving the defrost and the AC on the ON
position for a drain test ?
