Many thanks for all the advice. I thought it was dodgy to try clamping them. As it turned out I managed to have the new caliper ready to fit and did a very quick change with minimal bleeding needed. now have a fuly functioning hand brake again.
As a cautionary tale to others though......all this became necessary because one sides hand brake cable started to stick a bit, this stopped the calper adjusting properly, which itself then became a bit sticky, this then got hot (the first sign I noticed). I tried fitting new h/brake cables but by this point the disc must have warped such that any journey over 7 or 8 miles caused more heat and I knew I had to change the caliper. To sort this properly I now have new cables, one new caliper, two new discs and a set of new pads. The brake works on three clicks and I expect I'm getting a few more mpg too.
Thanks again
Keith
