Well if you are stranded with naught else to do, you can try reseating all the connectors as Ingo suggested. Call it the Click’n-Pray approach..
It might be worth ducking into the local Napa, AutoZone whatever to see if by chance they have an ignition module and coil where you currently are.
There is just enough VW product out there and enough cross-over that maybe you’ll get lucky.
What is your current location so we can help search out parts and distance?

The on-off-on-off behavior with changing throttle position and rpm reminded me of the beginnings of a POS channel failure on the AAN ignition system (I've had three of those, so far), except this is all cylinders cutting out rather than just one. Nathan's offered to bring a spare coil and ign module tonight. In the meantime, I'll make the 1.5 hour drive back down to see if I can limp it up here, trying the fuel pump swap if needed. Anyone have tips for a reviving a failing coil or ignition module? Will cooling off with a bag of ice or blast from upside-down computer duster spray help?
