[urq] fried starter?

Steve,

Not to split hairs here , however if the engine is hard to turn, or the starter is shorted
internally,or starter bearing is damaged, the increased current flow will bring the battery voltage down significantly
BTDT many times, giving a false indication that the battery is the culprit.

I'm not saying your wrong.

A quick voltage drop test on the battery cables would eliminate a connection problem IMO.

Cheers,

Good luck with the car Gary.

Craig.

Good call Chris ... that is often overlooked. The other thing that comes to
mind is that the battery has a problem.

The comment about the starter making funny noises makes one wonder about the
starter too ...

Check the voltage at the battery when you're cranking ... if you see the
voltage drop significantly at the battery then that's your culprit. If the
voltage at the battery stays high, it is likely to be the ground strap.

My wife had an intermittent starting problem in the 5kCSQA once ... every
time I'd go to look for it the problem would go away. Finally it was
failing while I was there, and I was able to trace the problem down to a
loose bolt that attached the ground strap to the body of the car ...

the car cool down by idling a few minutes. When I went to start it up Sunday
morning, it would hardly crank over. I thought maybe I left on the dome
light, so I hooked up my battery charger. After 15 min or so, I tried it.
Same thing, very slow cranking, voltage gauge dropped all the way to zero
and the starter is making funny sounds. I just had it rebuilt last August,
and up until now it spun nice and fast and quiet.

Give a quick check on the chassis ground strap between engine and frame
before you pull the starter.
