Yeah I've adjusted it in the past - I think it is properly set but will
check before swapping heater valves.
Do most people drain the coolant (I'm sure this is the "proper" way) or try
to cheat by crimping off the hoses and doing a super quick valve swap with
some coolant loss?

I would not expect the HC to become warm to the touch. Don't forget that
the control cable may not be adjusted properly and that is why there is flow
to the HC. The temp control mechanism is rather odd on this car.

If the temp slider is to no heat/full cold - should the heater core still
warm up? Or does a warm heater core mean faulty heater valve?
