[urq] I wish we had more members...

I think that chronologically relevant interest is the part that Audi is
overlooking. They didn't really have any enthusiast cars, relative to those
from other marques. There were Audi vehicles then, but they didn't run in
quite the same circles as the enthusiast models from the others. This is of
course only my opinion based on my awareness of Audi's pre-1980's offerings.
Others may have a different opinion. Either way, it seems to me that the
current enthusiast base for Audi is concentrated on models from 1980-ish on.
And so what? Does that make their enthusiasm any less genuine? When
someone needs a windshield for a urq and can't get one, how is that any
different than needing a windshiled for a 1959 190SL? I think Audi is
making the mistake of discounting the enthusiasm for the very range of model
years that gave them a footing in the car business, however shaky it may
have been at times, simply because it doesn't correspond with the other
marques' chronology.

Echoing Ed's comments - I have also given up wishing that Audi were proud of
its non-racing brand-history akin to what Mercedes is. That pride could
translate into long-term support, or just marketing. Either would be an
improvement. I often wonder why with a slogan of Vorsprung durch Technik;
there's rarely if ever campaigns talking all the Audi innovations since the
earliest days.
Part of what may be our own downfall as an enthusiast-group is that our love
for the brand's cars begins much later in the company's history. Porsche,
BMW and Mercedes people LOVE their 50's, 60's and 70's cars. There are very
few Audi cars before '81 that I love enough to keep one alive. I'm not
saying there are no good Audi-brand vehicles from back then - but far, far
fewer than P/B/M.
