Mike,
My response wasn't in response to you.  In fact, I can't say that I even 
read your post before my post - sorry...  My point is just that the fact 
a car's brakes CAN overcome the engine, many (most?) situations aren't 
ones that lend themselves to a full panic stop, which is about the only 
way that braking will stop a car with a WOT.  The media always goes for 
the most sensational, and we naturally point to those examples to say 
how poorly some people react to adverse situations.  Some people do a 
good job of assessing a situation and dealing with it, while others lock 
up and kill innocent people.  Most cases are probably in between.
