[urq] Audi but not quattro question

Afternoon all
As well as the quattro we have a 2001 A6 Avant with factory fitted Sat Nav (built in to Symphony Head Unit) which runs from a CD-ROM. With the disc installed the unit does eveything it is supposed to - the only problem is the unit can not identify any satellites and so doesn't know where it is to start with. Does anyone have experience of this and if so is it likely to be as simple as just the antenna not working? Are these known to cease working? If I simply unplug the antenna just beneath it's base (i.e. up inside where the load area interior light fitting - can I even do this, I don't know?) and plug in a generic after-market antenna, will this cure it? Having no experince of sat navs at all (3mile to one inch map usually gets me around) I'd like a bit of a pointer before I start dismantling and probably spending on bits I don't need.
