Ok, so what you have added makes more sense.. :-)

I too had been *very bad*. I came upon a killer deal for a set of triple
weber carbs and a manifold for my Triumph TR6. (But no air cleaners!)

I immidiately bolted the setup on, and took if for a 'drive', fully intending
to purchase the required aircleaners. Well, you know how things like that
go! Can't see the carbs, so 'out of sight, out of mind'..

Drove it without air cleaners for two summers, including at a fair clip down
some sandy rally roads (TR6 was *NOT* happy with that. It likes SMOOTH
roads!)

End result? COmpression started going down, and crankcase was starting to
pressurize a bit. Teardown revealed nothing obviously wrong, but cylinder
bores looked like they had been 'rough honed', or gone over with really fine
sandpaper. No grooves in the cylinder walls, but not a smooth and shiny
finish to the bores either.

So lesson learned: yes, an excellent idea to run with a good airfilter setup!
