Eric
To your question re: removal of slave... I have found the urq slaves to be the toughest to get out, and have had many originals in 016's to have to deal with. The best method IME is to remove the power steering resevoir (and the master > slave hose if you can), spray some white lithium grease in the roll pin hole. Grab that often unused pickle fork (or a pry bar would work I suppose) and a big/ger hammer. On a non trans removal slave R&R, I have never lost using this crude but effective method.
Since you are not really sure the cause, the best thing is to do is SMRpray (Slave and Master R&R + pray = it might work), since those items you will replace if doing a clutch anyhow.
HTH and good luck

Correct Steve, clutch is behaving as if pedal is depressed. The only experience
I have with slave removal is on 01E boxes, which have mounting bolts instead of
the pin, and there's a little edge on the flange, allowing the cylinder to rest
against clutch spring pressure before installing the bolt. Does this one have a
similar edge?
I didn't detect any movement when trying to walk it out, but I'll try it again
today. The engine was not yet started when this occurred, but I did fire it up
shortly afterward.
