Andrew,

The chrome in there is more an aesthetic thing than a light output enhancer.
It gives the lamps a more deep and "finished" look. I personally don't like
the all-black look, it just don't work on these surrounds. They are way too
deep and it won't look correct. I've tried it a few times on my car, and I
ended repairing a set with small patches of chrome metallic tape where the
original chrome was peeling.

Look at this before you paint them :

As for painting chrome, I've tried sanding, buffing, good quality primers
and stuff but paint was always peeling after a while. That's why I reverted
to the correct chrome+black setup.

Last word : if you still do it, use semi-gloss black, not flat black (which
absorb light even more). The Sport Q was semi-gloss...

I'm looking for some list wisdom about how to remove chrome from plastic.
I've got a mint set of early quad headlight surrounds. Rather than painting
over the chrome that surrounds all of the front surfaces of the trim I would
love to strip the trim back to plastic and then paint them black for a
better bond. Is there anything that will lift the chrome without eating the
plastic beneath?

Failing that plan is there a reliable way to prep the chrome to take black
trim paint?

I assume the trim on the early urq included chrome on the inner trim
surfaces to avoid light absorbance?

Thanks so much.
