[urq] re-quattro-ing a quattro - ALSO

Jon

For what it's worth I run my 87 WR on stock springs, stock bilsteins, stock
w/bone bushes but solid aluminium subframe mounts with superflex polybushes
on the anti-roll (sway?) bar. Nice ride on normal (bad) roads here in the
UK. I know what you mean about the tram-lining on 8" ronals. When I switch
to 6" ronals for the winter with Toyo snowprox it becomes a joy to drive.
Most important though is wheel alignment. It must be right and I would
imagine chopped springs alters the alignment somewhat and must have some
effect on how it drives.
I can't help re: the gear box but I would imagine short gears while fun,
gets a bit wearing after a while.
I know what you mean about the "look" but if the car not feeling good to
drive means it spends it's life in the garage I reckon you would be better
off making it "feel" right and then you'll start to enjoy it all over
again.......and then you can forget about the beetley thing your friend is
selling. :-)

Regards

Keith

'87 WR

Looks great, thanks Martin!

ALSO - the short 5th gear on my 4.11 4kq gearbox drives me mad. Having
the first 4 gears close together is great for the occasional angry
blast-off, however I would LOVE a tall cruising gear for road trips.
I'm pretty ignorant with regard to transmissions - anyone have any
idea whether it would be feasible to swap in a taller 5th to a 4kq
gearbox? I'm kind of shuddering at the idea of r&r'ing that tranny
again, but I think it would pay off long term...
