As Steve had mentioned, I did not mean to use the heater valve to block
the hose in the case of a failure.
I was just stating that in normal use it does block the flow, so
blocking the flow in some other manner would be fine.
If you needed coolant to flow there would be a bypass built into the
valve.
The funny thing in my car is that the engine actually runs hotter if I
have the temperature control in the hot position.

The best option in my opinion is to keep a piece of heater hose in the trunk that's cut to the proper length to go from that coolant pipe to the head thus completely eliminating the heater core and valve from the coolant loop.
