Hi Paul
It is an interference engine so if you "risk" the belt and it goes badly, the costs in time, money and mental health will be significant. 10 years is a long time in one position for a belt and so might be best to change it. It is something you can do yourself. Two things you must have or have access to are a torque wrench that will go to 400nM and a tool to lock the crank. The instructions on the late Phil Paynes site are spot on and will show you what is involved http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/
All the rest is patience and attention to detail and you can always ask the list if you get stuck.
Hope this helps
All the best
Keith

I am abouit to do this very same scenario to my 944 because on an interference engine its worth the insurance. But if they give it green lite then wait, the 944 drives more mass and has some steep angles so its interval is 30k but you wonder about the years w/o the miles.....if ur npot huirting 4 $ then do the belt, pump, pulleys tensioners etc. And have peace of mind. Good luck with the car!!

>> I just spent two hours cleaning contacts, probing connections, disassembling switches, dropping misc parts onto the gravel, figuring out how to clean and reassemble said switch just to get the turn signals to work. But guess what, the turn signals now work! Ditto similar efforts for power windows (thanks in advance Dennis) radio, clock etc. But they now work! Thanks to everyone at Audifans urq for their help!
>>
>> So now I have another question. This 83 urq had the timing belt and water pump redone at 50k miles, it is now at 54k, but it has been almost 10 years. Is this a big priority? It sounds like a major project. Anytime you have to disassemble the front of the car, it sounds major to me...
>>
>> If it is a priority, is it a reasonable DIY project? The car is going to 2Bennett next week for a general evaluation, should I just have them do this? What is a reasonable cost?
