John
Have a read of this: http://audi.humanspeakers.com/gauges.htm This is what I followed when I installed the gauges in my quattro. The main bit of Hugh’s site is all about audio speakers but the audi section is brilliant and well worth book marking: http://audi.humanspeakers.com/
Hope this helps.

p.s. I looked in Lawrence Meredith’s book on the quattro and that too confirmed, no coolant temp gauge on analogue dash quattros. Just a warning light.
