John
Have a read of this: http://audi.humanspeakers.com/gauges.htm
This is what I followed when I installed the gauges in my quattro. The main bit
of Hugh’s site is all about audio speakers but the audi section is brilliant and
well worth book marking: http://audi.humanspeakers.com/
Hope this helps.

p.s. I looked in Lawrence Meredith’s book on the quattro and that too
confirmed, no coolant temp gauge on analogue dash quattros. Just a warning
light.

Audi quattro shows good pictures of the original analog dashs. These show only
boost and fuel guages.

no water temp gauge on the stock car? That would be odd for such a "hot"
