I hear what you say and know what you mean. I just take as I find and I've never had a problem and whilst I always shop around for best deal sometimes one has to rely on those who've taken the oppotunity to buy those dwindling parts. Fortunately a lot of the parts on the quattro are shared with other models of the VAG range or other German manufacturers. The one thing that drew me to this list back in 2001 was the boundless inventiveness and resulting vast knowledge, particulalry of those of you in N.America whose parts supply has always been parlous, enabling one to get around issues. I remain eternally grateful for all the help I have received over the years and when able to reciprocate I do. As I say, I take as I find and we all have different experiences I'm sure. But I know what you mean Pat and am not without those thoughts too. Sometimes though, needs must.
Have a good weekend (lovely sunny day here in deepest Worcestershire 😄)
Regards
Keith

>> Here in the UK I have used and had excellent service from http://www.germanautopartsdirect.co.uk/index.html for head bolts, head gaskets and tappet shims. They have a "shop" on Ebay UK. Pete Reeve at http://www.quattrocorner.com/ is excellent and has huge experience/stock and can get even the difficult stuff for quattros. What I would say about exhaust manifold studs/nuts is you can get suitable studs almost anywhere but make sure you get the correct OEM nuts and don't be tempted to re-use old ones (same goes for head bolts).
>> Re: valve cover gaskets - I have always found the cork ones to seal better than the rubber ones. Be careful buying water pumps on line - there are (not so) subtle differences - number of teeth on the pulley and piss-poor plastic instead of steel impellors.
>> Hope this helps
