I've been buying filters and other maintenance items from bimmerparts, or
other on line vendors who carry audi parts. The filters for the V6 engines
run about $12 and are Bosch branded.

I think I did get lucky because one time when my wife started the car up it
started making a loud metallic screeching noise. I'm pretty sure it was the
starter still engaged. Besides killing the starter there is also the chance
of stripping the teeth off the fly wheel. Now that gets to be an expensive
repair.
