Thanks Jon

It was just as I had suspected. So it is common is it ? . Well for over
$350.00 Canadian for the harness I have decided to repair it. Anyone ever
done this ? The audi dealer says they sell the specialized connectors in a
"patch kit" as repairs are common .. go figure ... I am going for the old
fashioned "splice in a piece of wire" repair with the heat shrink.
For anyone who is interested I spliced into the line at the bend, and
although the licence plate was the only visible sign 7 of the 8 wires were
cut right through. I am amazed the reverse lights didn't come on when I
tried to lock the car from the trunk !!

as usual I will keep you guys posted of any progress.
