You should get about 35 mpg on long runs and about 26 mpg around town 
(stop/start) by the manual. So it doesn't sound like you're too far out. My fuel 
consumption improved greatly (along with general running) when I finally located 
that hesitation problem to the 02 sensors and replaced them both - I reckon 
mine's almost back to 'as new' by-the-owners-manual figures now... Seriously, 
since having replaced those 02 sensors, I would put them on the list of regular 
service items, along with timing belts, spark plugs, etc to be replaced at 
definite intervals. Considering the cumulative damage they can do to the rest of 
the engine and other components, indirectly, its just not worth not replacing 
them for the cost and effort involved (much less overall than, say a timing 
belt). I'd probably replace mine after 80,000 or so, i reckon...
