[V6-12v] How do you test the "ignition output stage"

The patient: my '94 100 S Avant with V6.
When I check the ECU codes, I get the DTC code 4332:
Ignition Output 1, 2, or 3. Possible causes: Short to
positive (B+) or ground in the ignition output stage
and/or wiring connection between the ECM and the
power output stage, or ECM is faulty.
So, how exactly do you test the ignition output stage
and power output stage? (Sorry, my Bentley applies to
my former '89 200). Is the IOS the coil pack? Is the
POS the module on the firewall? Now that it's above
freezing, I'm going to pull wires, clean them, and spray
them with WD-40, and hope that helps.
