Eric,
My '92 100S (non-Q) will also do this on occasion. Exactly as you put it, it
feels like stopping in a manual car without depressing the clutch and
leaving it in gear. With mine, if I don't quickly pop the car into neutral,
it will sometimes stall. Pop it back in drive, and all is OK. Happens maybe
once every month or so, and has done it intermittently since I bought the
car back in '96. It doesn't throw a fault code either when it happens (all
the gears on the cluster selector screen will be illuminated when a fault is
stored). I had the fluid and filter changed at ~60k miles, and I'd say it
did lower the frequency of it happening a bit. I'm approaching 120k now, so
maybe its time to replace the fluid and filter again. I'm debating doing
this on mine, since I am in the same boat as you and will probably be
selling the car in the next 4 months or so. Maybe worth a shot.

Subject: 93 100: transmission wont downshift
Greetings-I'm hoping for some ideas...
My Audi 100 CSQ wagon (165K miles) exhibits the following on rare
occasions. Pulling up to a stop light, slightly aggressive braking, come
to a complete stop-yet the transmission still wants to go. Drive train
shudders for a second or two. Very similar to what you'd expect in a
manual transmission car coming to a stop without pushing the clutch in.
This behavior was first noticed in 1997-1998 at about 50K miles (I've
owned it since July 1996 and 25K miles). At that time, under warrantee
the dealer suspected ABS sensors, which were of course, OK.
Impossible to reproduce-I'd say it occurs MAYBE once every other month.
In fact it happens so rarely I never think about it... until now when
I'm attempting to sell it. Sure enough it happens during a test drive by
an interested driver.
I'm thinking ATF fluid levels (how to check?) or since I can't recall
last time ATF was changed, perhaps a fluid change is in order.
What do you think?
