[V6-12v] A6qa overheating issues

Hi,

The rad fan is controlled by a thermo switch and a resistor pack. I forget if there is a fuse link somewhere as well - I suspect there is... Anyhow. I assume the location of parts is the same on your A6 as it is on my 90:

The resistor pack is on the port side subframe. All the way forward. It looks like a large L-bracket with wires sticking out of it.
The thermo sensor is at the bottom of the radiator by the drain plug. It's a rather big thing with a hex head on it.

Typically what happens is that the fan refuses to run at any speed other than high (when the thermometer reaches "1 o'clock"). This is caused by a burned out resistor pack. However, if the fan on your car doesn't run at all, I'd suspect a burned out fuse link or dead fan.

Now I had a problem with one of thefans trying to weld itself but it was still working till the one I had on order arrived tomorrow. Now I have a tank coming at the same time so all will be fine soon as long as I can get an answer on this question. First of all, the fix I used to go from a gas station to the hotel and then the hotel to my home (10 miles) is plugging the hoses going to the tank after refilling the radiator. The question is why is the cooling fan not trying to turn on? I tripped something when the bad fan gave up the ghost. Where is the circit breaker or fuse (I checked the fuses) that may keep the fans from coming on? I remember a big fuse type breaker my 200qt had on the side of the engine compartment. Does the A6 12v have the same type thing and where is it? Thanks BA
