Thank you. I have the '97 A6 (C4). I just changed from A100 2.8E Quattro to
A6 2.5TDi front only, so your procedure should work.

I've found the safest way is to remove the vent above the switches first.
This is done by getting two pieces of coat hanger wire and bending one small
hook onto each piece. Insert them into the far left and right sides of the
vent, and hook them on something solid. Gently pull outwards, and the vent
should pop right out. Now you have access to the top of the switches and
some access to their rear plugs, which makes them easier to pop in an out.
This procedure is for the 100 BTW, so if you have a 90 it maybe different.
